The Black Motherhood Project

The Black Motherhood Project is an independent documentary film that explores the complex relationship between black women and their mothers throughout the diaspora. While centering the experience of black daughterhood, the film asks: can love and abuse coexist? In what ways do black mothers and daughters rob each other of personhood? How can black daughters begin to heal from this relationship? Inspired by Marlon Riggs’ "Tongues Untied" and Ntozake Shange’s "for colored girls", the film interweaves interviews, poetry, and song to create a symphony of narratives. In addition, the creative team for the film is comprised entirely of black women and femmes.
As the producer, I had a hand in all aspects of translating the vision of our brilliant creater and director. I interviewed, selected, and managed team members, created a production schedule and call sheets, handled legal issues, planned an exhibition and managed finances. On the creative end, I operated the boom mic during interviews, interviewed subjects and provided feedback on the edits of the film. We are currently in post-production and in the process of entering the film into festivals.
